The local population of the Peruvian highlands has used Maca for the past 5,000 years as a high-grade nourishment. The Incas, a well-organized and developed Peruvian civilization, also knew Maca as a plant with medicinal powers. Before battle, the Inca warriors would eat Maca for extra power. Also, the messengers and couriers, who had to walk enormous distances throughout the huge Inca Empire, received Maca from the Inca king. Because of the conquest of the South American continent, the Spanish became familiar with Maca. Their horses were weakened and became infertile because of the high altitude.
That's why the local population recommended to the Spaniards giving Maca to their horses. The results made such an impression on the conquistadors that they reported it in their annals. Afterwards, they even collected their taxes in kilograms of Maca, which they transported back to Spain. Also, in the homeland, the plant was appreciated for its unique qualities: improvement of memory, stamina, increase of libido and decreasing anaemia and depression. Ulimately though, Maca fell into oblivion in Europe. Only in the Peruvian Andes did the people continue using Maca.
Potencey increasing plant
Only until recently, could this potency-increasing plant be bought in the local markets of the Andes. During the 60`s and 80`s scientists carried out botanical research in Peru. They studied what was called 'the lost vegetation of the Andes'. One of these lost plants was Maca. Within this framework, a book was published and this helped to bring Maca back out of oblivion. Today, the popularity of Maca is growing because people have discovered that the plant really has a positive effect on increasing energy and libido levels and sexual performances.
